Nikon 50mm f/1.4G Review

The Nikon 50mm f/1.4G was the second lens I purchased when I bought my first DSLR, at that time I only got this lens because of what photographers were saying about it and how great it is, and honestly I really did not like it when I was using it on my crop frame DSLR's, but when I bought my full frame camera I started using it much more and use it as my 'to-go' lens often.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is probably the cheapest Full Frame (FX) lens that you can buy, so if you're planning on buying it, it will a really great investment especially if you're planning on buying a Full Frame DSLR in the future.

The reason why you SHOULD buy this lens is it's small size and light weight, it's GREAT in low light situations, and I personally think it is the best lens for street photography, and it's also the lens to take if you don't feel like carrying a heavy lens. The lens is also SUPER fast and I simply love the Bokeh that this lens offers.

Now it's true that the 50mm f/1.4G is a great lens, but I honestly don't recommend buying it as your first lens (assuming you have a Crop Frame DSLR). In my experience I believe that the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 should be the first lens any person who's entering the world of DSLR should buy.

Also, many argue about if the 50mm is a good focal length for shooting portraits, I personally won't use for portraits since you'll be standing really close to your subject which makes most people uncomfortable (which is something you don't want of course).

I will say that the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is great lens to have, it's not wide enough for it to become a good lens for landscapes, and the focal length is not ideal for portraits as I mentioned earlier.

Don't Like:

  • Not your portrait lens
  • Not the best lens for Crop Frame DSLR's

  • Light weight and small size
  • Super fast focus
  • 'The' lens for Street Photography
  • Beautiful Bokeh
  • Affordable Price
